Cosmetic surgery is not a decision to be taken lightly and it calls for careful consideration and a lot of thought, including a possible consultation to help make the decision on the best procedure for yourself. The world of cosmetic surgery can be a dazzling one, especially for someone who has never had any work done before. With so many different procedures available from relatively minimal downtime, non-surgical treatments such Botox to complex surgical procedures such as  tummy tuck, it can sometimes be tricky to know which the best one for your desired look.

The law in the UK at the minute when it comes to cosmetic surgery is that anyone 16 or over can consent to undergoing a procedure, but many cosmetic surgeons will choose to only perform surgeries on patients who are 18 and over. With both surgical and non-surgical options available, there are many different factors and limitations to consider, especially when it comes to age.

Importance of Age in Cosmetic Surgery

Depending on the finished look you desire, age can have a huge impact. If you have surgery too young, it may not produce the best results as you grow older. With a lot of cosmetic surgery procedures there appears to be an ideal age range for achieving the look you want. The younger you are, the less likely your bone structure will have stopped developing and maturing which can have a big effect on some cosmetic surgery.

Here at Beyond Beauty Cosmetic we advise everyone on the best path to take if they wish to make a change to their appearance.

Cosmetic Surgery and Social Media

Social media, such as the likes of Instagram, has begun to make a difference in the way we look at ourselves; from flawless looking celebrities and models to filtered selfies, the younger generation are more bothered than ever with the way they look. A young adult or teenager can be particularly affected both physically and psychologically when it comes to their appearance due to the pressure caused by the media. From this, teenagers could easily turn to a ‘quick fix’ solution to fit in with their peers.

Despite this, a hormonal decision made by a teenager could easily be something that they regret and so it is even more important to be aware of the ideal age ranges and what results cosmetic surgery can leave you with depending on how old you are.

Teenagers have grown up reading about celebrities having cosmetic surgery and are often filled with the idea that if they want bigger lips or smoother skin that they can easily get it, especially as cosmetic surgery has somewhat been normalised in recent years. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has expressed concern over younger patients wanting surgery due to a level of vulnerability and self-esteem issues. President of BAAPS Michael Cadier claimed they are seeing more and more young people who want cosmetic surgery.

What is the ideal age for cosmetic surgery?

Different procedures produce different results and therefore there can be varying ages when a certain procedure is ideal. In some instances, young skin or a younger body can have an advantage under some surgery but in other cases you are better advised to wait until you are older.

Procedures such as rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a nose job, can be performed for the younger patient from around the age of 18-20. While the procedure shouldn’t be carried out until facial bones have stopped developing, young skin can readapt itself to the changed facial structure under rhinoplasty surgery.

Cosmetic surgery procedures such as Botox, tummy tuck or liposuction often provide better results when the patient is in their mid-30s. In terms of Botox, wrinkles do not start to appear permanently until you are in your mid to late 30s and so it would perhaps be a more reasonable choice to wait until this age if you are wanting Botox.

Liposuction, the procedure to shift stubborn fat from certain areas of the body, can sometimes deliver better results in your mid-30s as elasticity in the skin is still present, meaning your body will complement and adapt to the slimmer shape better.

For procedures such a breast augmentation or breast uplift, the ages can vary. Breast surgery should not be undertaken until you are over the age of 18, down to the reason that you may not have finished developing. Many patients look to their mid-20s to get breast augmentation, with good quality breast implants able to stand the test of time. In terms of wanting a breast uplift, many patients reap the benefits when they are older, perhaps in their mid-40s.
